Watzke-Durling Line

This post is intended as a compilation of material from posts on Parents and Ancestors (Ed Broadus), other posts on Family Enscussions, and email exchanges with Betty Tegtmeier, daughter of Bertha (Durling) Peck and my first cousin. My plan is to use this as a clearing point for information on the Durling-Watzke line through which my Mother, Ruth (Durling) Broadus, came.

Because there is much historical material and more to come, I have added a link to this post in the Links column to the left, thus making it easier to add new material to the post or comments. I will begin by posting some of the most recent emails and posts discussing the Durling family in the early part of the 20th Century. My maternal grandparents were George and Wilhelmina(Watzke) Durling. For further reference, see Edwin Broadus's Blog,
Parents and Ancestors.

I will begin the narrative at the point where Ed posted a picture of George and Wilhelmina Durling on his Blog Parents and Ancestors. Click on George and Wilhelmina Durling in the line above to open that post where you can see the picture and the lengthy string of comments associated with it. I will not reproduce them here.

If I find any further material that is relevant to the story line I will add it here or provide a link to the original. If you want to add anything to this post, send it to me and I will add it on, or you can click on Comments below and add it as a comment. Matters not--the main point is to collect the information in one central location.

The Durling girls' (Clara, Bertha, and Ruth) favorite book: "A Girl of the Limberlost" by Gene Stratton-Porter. This and "Freckles" by the same author are the only books my mother ever told me about. The first was her very, favorite romance story when she was a teenager. If you would like to know more of what these girls loved, go to this website for a free online copy: http://www.online-literature.com/stratton-porter/girl-of-the-limberlost/. Happy reading from days gone by.
