My Great-Grandchildren

Fourth of July at Jami and John's. From the left, Jami, Melissa, David, and Jessica.

As Dave once said, the stump doesn't fall far from the tree. David and Aron Bonner, on a camping trip.

Not to be picky, sister dear, but I was not aware the stump did anything but sit in the ground. No doubt you meant to say the tree does not fall far from the stump, since it is the tree that is doing the falling.
Sorry--couldn't resist...

Russell and David: Note that I was quoting Dave, who, if I remember correctly, said it exactly the way I wrote it. Which, by the way, is the reason I quoted it.

Dave did not post the comment so I could not address the issue directly to him. Besides, he would just get apologetic whereas you will fire back with as good as you received.

Actually, Russell, the more I think about it, I think the original quote was "the apple does not fall far from the tree."

But, whatever, it matters not. As with most cliches, Dave's statement communicated the point, as long as one does not deconstruct the text.
